Dusty conditions reduce visibility when transiting to and from the Shoalwater Bay training area. During Talisman Sabre 2011 thousands of personnel, cars, trucks, tanks and other armored fighting vehicles will use the roads around Rockhampton and other exercise areas across Australia. Defence is a good environmental steward and neighbor. A strict ‘weed and seed’ bio-security management system is being implemented for all vehicles entering the Shoalwater Bay training area. Multiple vehicle convoys and aircraft movements are planned to limit inconvenience to the public. During Talisman Sabre 2011, Defence will also continue its ongoing program of assisting with small community projects in the Rockhampton area. Exercise Talisman Sabre (July 11-29) is a major bilateral exercise designed to train Australian and United States forces in planning and conducting combined operations across the full spectrum of military operations from conventional conflict to peacekeeping and humanitarian assistance in order to improve Australian–U.S. combat readiness and interoperability.
