BERING SEA – Dave Forcucci checks his cell phone Saturday, Sept. 15, 2018, in the Ship-based Science Technical Support in the Arctic (STARC) lab aboard the Coast Guard Cutter Healy (WAGB-20) in the Bering Sea. As the only U.S. military ship dedicated to conducting scientific research in the Arctic, the Healy has a compliment of sensors to measure environmental conditions, which is coordinated within STARC. A team of about 30 scientists is aboard the Healy to deploy sensors and autonomous submarines in the Arctic to study stratified ocean dynamics and how environmental factors affect the water below the ice surface.
