BERING SEA – A crew member aboard the U.S. Coast Guard Cutter Healy (WAGB-20) holds up four fingers Sunday, Sept. 16, 2018, while Petty Officer 2nd Class James Bowell looks on during a risk assessment in the Bering Sea. Prior to any evolution, crew members assess risk based on several factors including weather, training, crew fitness and event complexity. Each member contributes to the assessment, and the scores are tallied to determine the safety precautions necessary to reduce risk. The Healy is one of two ice breakers in U.S. service and is the only military ship dedicated to conducting ice research in the Arctic.
