U.S. Marine Corps Lance Cpl. Ramon Mendoza tests an M-31 arresting gear at Clark Air Base, Philippines, March 19, 2019, in preparation for Exercise Balikatan. An M-31 arresting gear can hook various tail-hook aircraft to rapidly decelerate aircraft as it lands. Balikatan is an annual exercise between the U.S. and the Philippines and comes from a Tagalog phrase meaning "shoulder-to-shoulder," representing the partnership between the two countries. Mendoza is an expeditionary airfield systems technician with Marine Wing Support Squadron 171. (U.S. Marine Corps photo by Lance Cpl. Tyler Harmon)
