U.S. Marines twist turnbuckles for an M-31 arresting gear at Clark Air Base, Philippines, March 21, 2019, in preparation for Exercise Balikatan. An M-31 arresting gear can hook various tail-hook aircraft to rapidly decelerate aircraft as it lands. Balikatan is an annual exercise between the U.S. and the Philippines and comes from a Tagalog phrase meaning "shoulder-to-shoulder," representing the partnership between the two countries. The exercise promotes regional security and humanitarian efforts for U.S. allies and partners. The Marines are expeditionary airfield systems technicians with Marine Wing Support Squadron 171.
