“I’ve done Boy Scouts of America since I was in fifth grade, and I made Eagle Scout my senior year. It was cool to not only get to hang out with friends, but it was also the first step to developing yourself outside of school. It was kind of cool getting to be your own leader for your own troop and to take them through things you’ve learned in the past.
To become an Eagle Scout, you have to lead a volunteer project that benefits the community, and I made a garden at a retirement home. I gave part of the food to them, and then most of it I gave to a local food bank. I had to get all the supplies to run it, maintain it over the season, and then get all of it to those places. There was a big group of us that I was put in charge of to get this project done, so that was the first steps to me becoming a leader.
If it taught me anything, it was to be kind to others. At the retirement home, we’d get the food, cut it up, and serve it to them. They were just really grateful that people were out there spending time with them and giving back to them because they don’t get to see a lot of their families. It puts you in a good mood to put them in a good mood, and they always had amazing stories.”
