Sgt. Randy Eustaquio, an infantryman with Guam Army National Guard's B Company, 1-294th Infantry Regiment, swims hard toward a canteen labeled with red tape during the water survival event in the 2012 Region VII Best Warrior Competition at Camp San Luis Obispo, Calif., April 24. Eustaquio had to grab, in sequence, color-coded canteens from the opposite side of the pool. Other tasks in the event included treading water for five minutes and traveling the length of the pool with a 30-pound, double-wrapped waterproof rucksack and weapon aid. Two rules competitors had to follow at all times were maintaining their earlobes above water level and not using the walls of the pool to propel themselves. The water survival event was designed to be a mystery to the competitors prior to its start in order to further challenge them.
