Cpl. Jonathan Wright, a combat engineer with 7th Engineer Support Battalion carefully crosses the light launching node section of a medium girder bridge under construction at Camp Pendleton, Calif., May 10. The heavy-launching node sits over 30 feet above the ground, while the light-launching node reaches just over the ground on the opposite side of the bridge slowly being rolled into position. The first Marines to cross the bridge are called ‘sweepers’. Their main task is to sweep the area with metal detectors to detect any landmines or improvised explosive devices that may be in place. Their secondary task is to clear debris from the area with axes and machetes to make room for the bridge to roll into place.
