Lance Cpl. Jeff Collins, a combat engineer with 7th Engineer Support Battalion, prepares to jump off the light-launching node section of a medium girder bridge under construction, while Cpl. Jonathan Wright uses a metal detector to sweep for improvised explosive devices and landmines during a training exercise at Camp Pendleton, Calif., May 10. Before a bridge is pushed into place several Marines will sweep the area to make sure it is safe for follow-on forces and to prevent damage to the bridge. Clearing bushes and other vegetation is another task of the sweepers.
