    I Marine Expeditionary Force

    A combat engineer with 7th Engineer Support Battalion, crosses the heavy-launching node section of a medium girder bridge under construction at Camp Pendleton, Calif., May 10. The first Marines to cross the launching node are called sweepers, whose main responsibility is to use metal detectors to check for improvised explosive devices and landmines. Other Marines, whose responsibility is to provide security for the sweepers and follow-on forces, follow them.
