Sgt. Brandon Davis, a wheeled vehicle mechanic assigned to the 689th Rapid Port Opening Element (RPOE), 832nd Trans. Bn, 597th Trans. Bde., briefs Brig. Gen. Heidi Hoyle, Commander, Military Surface Deployment and Distribution Command (SDDC) and Command Sgt. Maj. Rocky Carr, SDDC’s senior enlisted leader, on the daily operations at the Quality Assurance Quality Control Center inside the 832nd Trans. Bn. motor pool during a tour of the Soldier's living and working spaces at Joint Base Langley-Eustis, Va. Jan. 19.

“Having personnel, equipment and tools helps make the mission successful,” Brig. Gen. Hoyle said, adding that her vision for the way ahead also includes more developmental opportunities for the Soldiers.

After the tour, Brig. Gen. Hoyle and Command Sgt. Maj. Carr held a listening session at the 597th Transportation Bde. headquarters.

The Rapid Port Opening Elements (RPOEs) provide an expeditionary answer to the challenge of logistics support in contingency response operations for the Department of Defense. The 688th, 689th and 690th RPOEs are all based at Joint Base Langley-Eustis, Va. and are the first active-duty Army units created specifically to provide surface transportation expertise for the U.S. Transportation Command’s Joint Task Force-Port Opening (JTF-PO) mission.
