Brig. Gen. Heidi Hoyle, Commander, Military Surface Deployment and Distribution Command (SDDC) and Command Sgt. Maj. Rocky Carr, SDDC’s senior enlisted leader, met with Soldiers assigned to the 690th Rapid Port Opening Element (RPOE, 832nd Trans. Bn., 597th Trans. Bde., at the unit’s Deployment Center during a tour of Joint Base Langley-Eustis, Va. Jan. 19.

During the walk-through inspection of the Deployment Center, most of the Soldiers were engaged in classroom training, while a few Soldiers demonstrated their unit's deployment readiness with hands-on demonstrations of their alert processes.

During the visit, the commander thanked the Soldiers for their hard work and discussed the importance of the unit's rapid response capabilities.

The 690th Rapid Port Opening Element is one of three RPOE units in the U.S. Army, which remain in a constant state of readiness, with one of the three units always on alert to support any mission at all times. To prepare, the RPOEs participate in multiple training exercises year-round alongside their Air Force and Navy counterparts to build on fundamental port opening skills and apply them to the ever-changing operational environment.
