Idaho Army National Guard Cpt. Blaine Ottinger served as a communications officer with the Idaho Army National Guard until recently relocating to Iowa and transferring to the Iowa Army National Guard.

Originally from Idaho, Ottinger attended Centennial High School in Boise where he first became interested in Lacrosse. Ottinger’s high school team won the High School State Championship in 2008. After high school Ottinger continued his education at Boise State University in Boise, Idaho where he also continued playing Lacrosse with the BSU Men’s Lacrosse Club Team. After BSU Ottinger served four years in the U.S. Marine Corps before coming back to Boise and eventually joining the Idaho Army National Guard. Living in the Boise area Ottinger joined the local Yeti Men’s Lacrosse Club.

Lacrosse has grown in popularity in Idaho from youth leagues up to adults. Lacrosse is a uniquely North American game and played throughout the United States and Canada. When Europeans first began exploring the North American continent French Missionaries observed Native American tribes playing a game originally called “stickball.” The games could last several days and the goals could be miles apart. Todays fields are 110 yards long by 80 yards wide. The game is played by rules that are very similar to hockey and using similar vocabulary.

A team is comprised of 10 players; 1 goalie, 3 defensemen, 3 mid-fielders and 3 attack-men. Each team must keep at least 4 players, including goalie, in its defensive half of the field and 3 players in its offensive zone. The 3 mid-fielders are free to roam entire field. The game has four quarters, plus a halftime.

The governing body for Lacrosse in the United States is USA Lacrosse. Throughout the college and university ranks the NCAA manages the games. USA Lacrosse claims there are currently 396 men’s and 525 women’s Lacrosse NCAA teams. The United States Military Academies of West Point, Annapolis, the Air Force Academy and the Coast Guard all participate in NCAA competition.
