Farmer Mohammed Abdu loads his watermelons onto the flat bed of a truck in the Khanfar District of the Abyan Governorate in Yemen in August 2021. Mohammed participated in a USAID-funded training on low-tunnel farming techniques in which plastic tunnels, also known as “quick hoops,” are used to create inexpensive tunnel greenhouses to grow fruits and vegetables. This protects crops from pests and disease and saves farmers money by using less fertilizer.
Mohammed planted one acre of watermelon seedlings using low-tunnel farming and was amazed at the results, including a measurably healthier, more productive crop with fruit that was uniform in both size and shape, netting a 275 percent increase in profit compared to one acre planted using traditional farming methods.
