New mother Abeer holds her infant, Monwar, in her home in Ta’izz, Yemen, in September 2021 while USAID-trained midwife Asmahan provides care to the child. When Abeer and her husband conceived Monwar after suffering a miscarriage during her first pregnancy, Asmahan began visiting their home, providing prenatal care and guidance on when to seek care from a doctor to ensure a healthy pregnancy. The USAID-funded System, Health and Resiliency Project (SHARP) trains and deploys midwives like Asmahan from the local community to be the critical link between mothers like Abeer and health facilities.
