A one-quarter scale model of the Lockheed XFV-1 vertical takeoff and landing aircraft is readied for testing in the 40- by 80-foot wind tunnel at the NASA Ames Research Center at Moffett Field, California, in the early 1950s. The aircraft was tested in the 40x80 tunnel in the early 1950s. The 80th anniversary of the first operation of the tunnel occurred in June. The 40x80 tunnel, along with the 80- by 120-foot wind tunnel at the Ames Research Center, are managed by Arnold Engineering Development Complex. Together, these two tunnels make up the National Full-Scale Aerodynamics Complex. (National Advisory Committee for Aeronautics photo)
