150303-N-DD717-004 SAINT PAUL, Minn. (March 3, 2015) Navy Operational Support Center Commanding Officer Capt. Brent McMurry visits with World War II Navy Reserve veteran and Saint Paul native Richard Thill moments before a ceremony at the Minnesota State Capitol commemorating the Centennial of the Navy Reserve. Thill, along with 84 Reservist shipmates from Saint Paul, served aboard the destroyer U.S.S. Ward— the ship that fired the first U.S. shots of the war, sinking a Japanese submarine hours before the attack on Pearl Harbor Dec. 7, 1941. In honor of the 100th anniversary, Governor Mark Dayton proclaimed March 3, 2015 to be “Navy Reserve Day” throughout Minnesota.
