GREAT LAKES, Ill., (February 27, 2015) – Hospital Corpsman 1st Class Sharon Barker mans the helm on board USS Trayer (BST 21) at Recruit Training Command (RTC) here, Feb. 27. Barker was a 2014 Chief of Naval Personnel (CNP)/ Manpower, Personnel, Training and Education (MPT&E) Sailor of the Year (SOY) finalist and taking part in a week of activities. Vice Adm. William F. Moran, CNP, named Intelligence Specialist 1st Class Johnetta Heckard, junior enlisted IS (Intelligence Specialist) detailer from Commander, Navy Personnel Command (NPC), the CNP/MPT&E SOY at a luncheon ceremony held in the Port O’ Call Banquet and Conference Center on Naval Station Great Lakes Feb. 27. Along with Heckard and Barker, from Recruit Training Command (RTC), Great Lakes, Ill., and the Naval Education and Training Command (NETC) SOY; Navy Counselor 1st Class Ryan A. Blackmer, from Navy Recruiting District Michigan in Detroit, and the Navy Recruiting Command (NRC) SOY was also a finalist. Trayer is a 210-foot-long Arleigh Burke-class destroyer simulator, the Navy’s largest. The simulator is used for Battle Stations 21, the culmination of all training received at the Navy’s only boot camp. Battle Stations 21 is a grueling 12-hour test, held entirely on board Trayer, of a recruit’s skills in several shipboard evolutions, including fighting fires, stopping floods and mass casualties.
