160809-N-IM705-137 BETHESDA, Md. (Aug. 9, 2016) Second-year medical students at the F. Edward Hébert School of Medicine at the Uniformed Services University of the Health Sciences (USU) simulate emergent needle decompression on a role player wearing a cut suit during Military Field Practicum 102 Advanced Combat Medical Experience (ACME) at USU, Aug. 9. The human-worn cut suit is the most realistic way to simulate effects of severe traumatic events on a live human while allowing medical students to safely perform real procedures on a live human – from the point of injury, to treatment en route, and transition of care to surgical intervention. The university conducts ACME every year as part of the Summer Operational Experience for second-year medical students at Naval Support Activity Bethesda. The purpose of ACME is to help students develop and reinforce knowledge, skills and attitudes necessary to perform effective pre-hospital assessment and stabilization of combat wounded casualties.
