PACIFIC OCEAN (August 14, 2016) – A landing craft air cushion approaches the well deck of the amphibious assault ship USS Makin Island (LHD 8) as Marines assigned to Marine Medium Tiltrotor Squadron (VMM) 163 (Reinforced) prepare to launch a CH-53 helicopter from the ship’s flight deck. Makin Island is the flag ship of the Makin Island Amphibious Ready Group, and is underway conducting Composite Training Unit Exercise with Amphibious Squadron Five and the 11th Marine Expeditionary Unit in preparation for an upcoming deployment.
