USS MAKIN ISLAND, At Sea (November 8, 2016) – A Marine with Battalion Landing Team 1st Bn., 4th Marines, 11th Marine Expeditionary Unit, slides down a rope toward the hangar deck of the USS Makin Island (LHD 8), during helicopter rope suspension technique (HRST) training conducted while afloat in the Pacific Ocean, Nov. 8, 2016. One of the main tactical advantages of HRST is it allows Marines to insert onto an objective with impassible terrain not permissive for an aircraft to land. The 11th MEU, part of the Makin Island Amphibious Ready Group, is operating in the U.S. 7th Fleet area of responsibility in support security and stability in the Indo-Asia-Pacific region.
