USS MAKIN ISLAND, At Sea (November 8, 2016) – A Marine with Battalion Landing Team 1st Bn., 4th Marines, 11th Marine Expeditionary Unit, slides down a fast-rope during helicopter rope suspension technique (HRST) training conducted aboard the USS Makin Island (LHD 8), while afloat in the Pacific Ocean, Nov. 8, 2016. Fast-roping, along with rappelling, and Special Purpose Insertion/Extraction (SPIE) rigging, are all HRST methods used to quickly and tactically insert or extract Marines by, onto or off of a specified landing site by aircraft. The 11th MEU, part of the Makin Island Amphibious Ready Group, is operating in the U.S. 7th Fleet area of responsibility in support security and stability in the Indo-Asia-Pacific region.
