JACKSONVILLE, Fla. (Feb. 14, 2019) – Cmdr. Frank Axelsen, a family medicine physician at Naval Hospital Jacksonville, checks a patient’s heart during a checkup. Axelsen, a native of Tampa, Florida, says “I’m so proud to be a physician entrusted with caring for our nation's warfighters, their families, and our retirees. Only in the Navy can I practice medicine on a forward deployed ship in the Pacific, with the Marine Corps, and at many remote locations in the world. I’m blessed to be surrounded by a medical team that displays the utmost camaraderie and willingness to move forward.” The Navy Medical Corps celebrates its 148th birthday on March 3. Navy physicians serve from the sea to the battlefield, all the way to the halls of Congress and the White House. They serve in the aviation and undersea medical communities, and as astronauts exploring the frontiers of space. (U.S. Navy photo by Jacob Sippel, Naval Hospital Jacksonville/Released).
