Combat engineers from the Washington Army National Guard and the Canadian army race their assault boats to a checkpoint during the “Best Sapper” skills competition on the Columbia River here Aug. 18. The competition between the combined U.S. and Canadian squads included an assault boat race, a 6.5 km (4.03 mile) road march, an engineer task evaluation, a field medical evaluation and a live fire range exercise. The competition was a refresher course of the skills the engineers will need to complete this weeks 36 hour field training exercise, the comprehensive training event of Kootenay Castor 2012. Kootenay Castor is a two week combined training exercise for combat engineers from the Washington Army National Guard and the Canadian army.
