During the ISIS occupation of Mosul, the College of Fine Arts suffered extensive damage and closed. Artworks were destroyed and strewn across the campus, as artmaking was believed to contradict Islamic State ideology.
USAID, through UNDP, rehabilitated the College of Fine Arts at Mosul University. The rehabilitation work included plastering and repainting the classroom walls, repairing doors and windows, replacing the roof, and restoring electrical systems. The rehabilitation was completed in April 2019. Today, the College offers third-level art courses ranging from music, theater, painting, and sculpture to over 2,500 students.
