Dr. Ekram lived in the city of Mosul all her life. However, during the conflict with ISIS, she was forced to flee to a close relative's house in Salah Al Din with her mother. She used the time away from the factory and her day-to-day activities to complete her Ph.D. degree in Organic Chemistry at Tikrit University.
After the liberation in 2017, Dr. Ekram returned to her city and joined the Fluids Factory as the Director. However, the factory was severely damaged.
Through its Funding Facility for Stabilization project, USAID and UNDP are supporting the rehabilitation of the factory, which is nearing completion. Soon the factory will employ 300 people from Mosul.
