PACIFIC OCEAN (Nov. 9, 2022) – Sailors aboard amphibious assault ship USS Makin Island (LHD 8) heave around on a phone-and-distance line during a replenishment-at-sea with fleet replenishment oiler USNS Henry J. Kaiser (T-AO 187), Nov. 9, 2022. The phone-and-distance line provides commanding officers of each ship direct lines of communication to pass navigational messages and provides a visual representation of the distance between the ships. The Makin Island Amphibious Ready Group, comprised of amphibious assault ship Makin Island and amphibious transport docks USS Anchorage (LPD 23) and USS John P. Murtha (LPD 26), is underway conducting routine operations in U.S. 3rd Fleet with the embarked 13th Marine Expeditionary Unit. (U.S. Navy photo by Mass Communication Specialist 3rd Class Eloise A.
