PACIFIC OCEAN (Nov. 16, 2022) – Gas Turbine Systems Technician (Mechanical) Fireman Kaylan West observes a gas turbine system in the main machinery room aboard amphibious assault ship USS Makin Island (LHD 8), Nov. 16, 2022. Regular observation of gas turbines is essential to ensure there is no leak of synthetic lube oil, which could result in damage to the ship’s engine system and cause shipboard fire hazard. The Makin Island Amphibious Ready Group, comprised of amphibious assault ship Makin Island and amphibious transport docks USS Anchorage (LPD 23) and USS John P. Murtha (LPD 26), is underway conducting routine operations in the U.S. 3rd Fleet with the embarked 13th Marine Expeditionary Unit.
