Increasing numbers of Santiago housewives are shopping in a chain of cooperative supermarkets, providing a greater variety of produce, lower prices, and - for some shoppers - a profitable investment. These supermarkets, called UNICOOP, were funded by the Cooperative Development Bank of Chile which received a loan of $3.65 million from the Agency for International Development to create a variety of cooperatives throughout the country. UNICOOP sells shares to members of the community, and many Chileans have invested in the expanding chain of supermarkets.
