PL-480 Title II: This girl is taking a break from eating her ration of USAID PL-480 Title II food to mug for the camera in the Indian State of Rajasthan. American food offered through a national, government-sponsored integrated child development program encourages families to send their girls to the Anganwadi Center, where they learn basic concepts of health and hygiene essential to life-long good health. The Anganwadi worker works with the village primary school teacher and local families to get girls enrolled in primary school. Most girls in rural Rajasthan never attend school or leave before the age of 12, to stay at home, help with the household chores, take care of their younger siblings, or get married. This Anganwadi Center is supported with training and USAID PL-480 Title II food provided by CARE-India. (Photo by Laura L. Hess)
