Monument Re-Dedication Honors Illinois National Guard's Famed 8th Infantry Regiment

Sgt. Benjamin West of Charleston, a member of the Illinois Army National Guard's 144th Army Band, stands at attention with his bugle in front of the Victory Monument during the re-dedication ceremony on July 5. The monument was renovated through the World War I Centennial Commission's 100 Cities project. Erected in 1927 after a lengthy campaign by the Chicago Daily Defender newspaper, the monument honors the World War I service of the Illinois Army National Guard's famed all African-American 8th Infantry Regiment.
