An African-American Soldier stands tall atop the Victory Monument on Chicago's Southside. The famous landmark was renovated through the World War I Centennial Commission's 100 Cities project. The monument honors the service of the Illinois Army National Guard's famed all African-American 8th Infantry Regiment, the only black unit to enter the "Great War" led completely by black officers.
