Members of the 8th Infantry Regiment Association, including Illinois Army National Guard Col. Nick Johnson, pose for a group photo following the re-dedication ceremony for the Victory Monument on Chicago's Southside on July 5. Col. Johnson, who commands the Guard's 65th Troop Command, is the former Commander of the 1st Battalion, 178th Infantry Regiment, which holds the lineage of the famed all African-American 8th Infantry Regiment. The 1-178th Infantryis slated to deploy to Afghanistan later this month. The Victory Monument honors the service of the 8th Infantry during World War I. The unit also fought with distinction in the Spanish-American War and World War II.
