With support from USAID, the Al-Diwaniyah Library has been rehabilitated.
Established in 1938, the Al-Diwaniyah Library in southern Iraq is one of the oldest and largest libraries in the country and is visited by school and university students, professors, researchers and all lovers of reading. After years of heavy use, the furniture, hallways, and facilities were worn down, forcing the library to close off some of the areas or limit use to certain spaces.
USAID’s Ta’afi program rehabilitated the library and provided new IT equipment to help bring visitors back into the library. Today, the Al-Diwaniyah Library hosts about 200 visitors daily, which is a 30 percent increase from before renovations. By revitalizing Diwaniyah’s only library, USAID is helping address an important community center and promoting Iraq’s rich cultural heritage.
