Farmers in Ninewa and western Anbar are already feeling the impact of climate change. With electricity often unreliable or too expensive and droughts becoming more frequent, it’s getting harder for farmers to irrigate their crops.
“A lack of electricity [to power my well] and rainfall greatly hindered my work,” Abdi said. “I couldn’t water the crops or cultivate all my land, so my family and I started thinking about leaving farming altogether."
USAID equipped Abdi with a solar panel to power his well, which helped him irrigate his crops. USAID also fully rehabilitated 87 irrigation wells, helping over 350 farming families, like Abdi’s, have more consistent access to water. With support from USAID, Abdi can now plant up to ten times more crops, helping to better provide for his family.
