1st Lt. William Baynes, from Joseph, Ore., and an Iraqi National Guard officer walk up a hill in Tall Afar, Iraq, after searching a sewage ditch for mines and unexploded ordnance. During an early morning operation on Aug. 1, 2004, three battalions from the 3rd Brigade, 2nd Infantry Division (Stryker Brigade Combat Team) and three Iraqi National Guard battalions conducted joint cordon and searches through the western Ninevah province city in an effort to seize weapons and detain terrorists seeking sanctuary in the city. Baynes is the platoon leader of 1st Platoon, Company B, 5th Battalion, 20th Infantry Regiment.
