ATLANTIC OCEAN (Aug. 15, 2016) Media from across the United States spend the day aboard USS George Washington (CVN 73) to observe the first ever carrier qualifications of a squadron flying the F-35C and speak with the pilots on how the aircraft performed. The F-35C will deliver command and control capabilities for future air wings allowing them to accomplish two important missions; assure access and power projection. The F-35C is designed to overcome a variety of threats - surface-to-air missiles, air-to-air missiles and tactical aircraft. The F-35C will replace legacy F/A-18C/D Hornets with the last Hornet squadron scheduled to retire in 2026. (U.S. Navy photo by Cmdr. Dave Hecht / Released)
