JACKSONVILLE, Fla. (Jan. 22, 2019) – Yeoman 2nd Class Julian Black helps update a command instruction with a sailor at Naval Hospital Jacksonville’s Human Resources Department. Black, a native of Augusta, Georgia, recently returned from an 11-week deployment aboard USNS Comfort (T-AH-20), as part of U.S. Southern Command’s Enduring Promise initiative. NH Jacksonville’s sailors were part of an embarked medical team, which worked with health and government partners in Ecuador, Peru, Colombia, and Honduras. The embarked medical team treated over 26,000 patients and conducted about 600 surgeries aboard the ship and at land-based sites. “I was responsible for creating and troubleshooting Common Access Cards. I produced 57 CACs for shore-going sailors, so they could execute medical operations. I also was an assistant duty section leader in charge of three personnel who executed colors and rendered honors for foreign distinguished visitors. This deployment was a great experience and allowed me to be part of my third humanitarian mission; my first two were aboard USS Iwo Jima (LHD-7) after Hurricane Matthew and Hurricane Irma."
