JACKSONVILLE, Fla. (Jan. 23, 2019) – Lt. Cmdr. Arthur Lammers, an anesthesiologist at Naval Hospital Jacksonville, administers an epidural to Personnel Specialist 3rd Class Mikaila Harwell as her husband, Mass Communication Specialist 2nd Class Hunter Harwell, supports her while she’s in labor. Lammers, a native of Plymouth, Wisconsin, recently returned from an 11-week deployment aboard USNS Comfort (T-AH-20), as part of U.S. Southern Command’s Enduring Promise initiative. NH Jacksonville’s sailors were part of an embarked medical team, which worked with health and government partners in Ecuador, Peru, Colombia, and Honduras. The embarked medical team treated over 26,000 patients and conducted about 600 surgeries aboard the ship and at land-based sites. “We provided care that was otherwise inaccessible. The people were truly grateful, and the gratitude was palpable. It was a humbling and honoring experience.” (U.S. Navy photo by Jacob Sippel, Naval Hospital Jacksonville/Released).
