JACKSONVILLE, Fla. (Jan. 23, 2019) – Leslie Smith, a registered nurse at Naval Hospital Jacksonville, places a fetal monitor on Ma Isabelle Luquinario in the Labor and Delivery Unit. Smith, a native of Montezuma, Georgia, says “I wanted to become a nurse after my mother was diagnosed with cancer. I knew after being with her throughout her year-long struggle, constantly in and out of the hospitals, that this is exactly what I wanted to do. I wanted to take care of sick patients and make them feel better. I wanted to make them feel cared for and to make a difference in their lives, just like the nurses did for my mother. I’m now working in L&D and love it! I love the teamwork we have, I love watching parents hold their babies for the first time, and I love being by my patients’ side, especially when they have nobody else. I love being a nurse.” (U.S. Navy photo by Jacob Sippel, Naval Hospital Jacksonville/Released).
