JACKSONVILLE, Fla. (Jan. 30, 2019) – Lt. Cmdr. Justin Stocks, a pulmonary and critical care physician at Naval Hospital Jacksonville, monitors Melinda Cole’s heart rate. February is American Heart Month. Stocks, a native of Willmar, Minnesota, recently returned from an 11-week deployment aboard USNS Comfort (T-AH-20), as part of U.S. Southern Command’s Enduring Promise initiative. NH Jacksonville’s sailors were part of an embarked medical team, which worked with health and government partners in Ecuador, Peru, Colombia, and Honduras. The embarked medical team treated over 26,000 patients and conducted about 600 surgeries aboard the ship and at land-based sites. “I visited 50 patients a day and provided basic primary care services, addressing common health problems such as diabetes, hypertension, and arthritis. On the ship, I delivered 24/7 critical care support for post-operative patients and managed complex pulmonary cases. The entire mission was an exceptional opportunity to provide humanitarian medical care to those in need.” (U.S. Navy photo by Jacob Sippel, Naval Hospital Jacksonville/Released).
