JACKSONVILLE, Fla. (Feb. 8, 2019) – Chief Hospital Corpsman Robert Shird (attached to Naval Medical Center Portsmouth) and Hospital Corpsman 1st Class Joshua Bowers (attached to 2nd Dental Battalion Camp Lejeune) practice their intravenous teaching skills on Feb. 8 at Naval Hospital Jacksonville. Both are preparing to be instructors for hospital corpsman trauma training at NH Jacksonville, the Navy’s second site to launch the program. Starting Feb. 11, 16 hospital corpsmen from across the Navy receive two weeks of training at NH Jacksonville (including various simulation labs and a Tactical Combat Casualty Care course). This is followed by five weeks at University of Florida Health Jacksonville (a Level 1 trauma center), with rotations in the emergency department, trauma resuscitation, intensive care unit, rapid response team, and wound management. The corpsmen, who already served one tour at a military treatment facility, are then assigned to operational units (like ships, aviation squadrons, and Marine units) across the globe. The clinical rotations provide enhanced real-world trauma experience for Navy hospital corpsmen, who provide life-saving care to sailors and Marines in the field. Navy Medicine Readiness and Training Command Jacksonville (co-located with NH Jacksonville) delivers a ready medical force, in support of Department of Defense missions around the globe.
