160817-N-WA993-029 YOKOSUKA, Japan (Aug. 17, 2016) Aviation Boatswain’s Mate (Handling) Airman Joshua Schuster, from Simi Valley, California, lowers the First Navy Jack flag, as Aviation Boatswain’s Mate (Handling) Airman Taylor Sloan, from Portland, Oregon, catches the flag on the flight deck of the Navy’s only forward-deployed aircraft carrier, USS Ronald Reagan (CVN 76), after the ship gets underway for Board of Inspection and Survey (INSURV) testing. On May 22, 2002, the U.S. Navy ordered the flag to be displayed on all U.S. Navy ships during the global war on terrorism. “We have to make sure the flag never touches the ground, because it’s disrespectful,” said Sloan. Ronald Reagan provides a combat-ready force, which protects and defends the collective maritime interests of the U.S. and its allies and partners in the Indo-Asia-Pacific region.
