U.S. Army Sgt. Ryan Sheidy, an infantryman with Bravo Company, 1st Battalion, 111th Infantry Regiment, poses for a portrait at the start of the Pennsylvania Army National Guard’s Best Warrior Competition at Fort Indiantown Gap, Pennsylvania, April 2, 2025.
"I am looking forward to the 12 mile ruck march because it's both a physical and mental challenge," he said. "I joined the Pennsylvania National Guard to serve my country and give back to my community. I enjoy the camaraderie and skill set that can not be mirrored in the public sector."
Competitors are evaluated on their individual ability to adapt and overcome challenging scenarios and battle-focused events, which tests their technical and tactical abilities under stress and extreme fatigue.
