U.S. Army Spc. Robert F. Ruiz-Rhoades, an intelligence analyst with Headquarters and Headquarters Company, 28th Expeditionary Combat Aviation Brigade, 28th Infantry Division, poses for a portrait at the start of the Pennsylvania Army National Guard’s Best Warrior Competition at Fort Indiantown Gap, Pennsylvania, April 2, 2025.
"I am looking forward to the 12 mile ruck much because its going to suck," he said. "I joined the Pennsylvania National Guard to serve in the military while also building my civilian career. The Guard allowed me to get a bachelor's degree and instilled in me discipline and professionalism in my life."
Competitors are evaluated on their individual ability to adapt and overcome challenging scenarios and battle-focused events, which tests their technical and tactical abilities under stress and extreme fatigue.
