U.S. Army Staff Sgt. Joseph Knepp, an Infantryman with Headquarters and Headquarters Company, 2nd Battalion, 112th Infantry Regiment, poses for a portrait at the start of the Pennsylvania Army National Guard’s Best Warrior Competition at Fort Indiantown Gap, Pennsylvania, April 2, 2025.
"I am looking forward to land navigation because of the more advanced set up," he said. "I joined the Pennsylvania National Guard for the career opportunities and to challenge myself. The Guard gives me a chance to get away from my job and hopefully soon I will be able to earn an AGR opportunity. Being in the Best Warrior Competition as NCO of the Year has really allowed me to gauge my potential."
Competitors are evaluated on their individual ability to adapt and overcome challenging scenarios and battle-focused events, which tests their technical and tactical abilities under stress and extreme fatigue.
