PACIFIC OCEAN – An AV-8B Harrier with the 15th Marine Expeditionary Unit’s Aviation Combat Element prepares to land on the flight deck aboard the amphibious assault ship USS America (LHA 6), July 28, 2017. The AV-8B Harrier has horizontal as well as vertical take off capabilities allowing them to take off and land virtually anywhere. The 15th MEU is deployed as a crises response and contingency force in the 7th Fleet’s area of operation, which spans more than 124 million square kilometers, stretching from the International Dateline to the India-Pakistan border and from the Kuril Islands in the North to the Antarctic in the South.
