160801-N-WA993-028 YOKOSUKA, Japan (Aug. 1, 2016) Quartermaster 3rd Class (SW) Miguel Medrano, from Garland, Texas, poses for a photograph by cases of sextants in the signal bridge aboard the Navy’s only forward-deployed aircraft carrier, USS Ronald Reagan (CVN 76). “Sextants are instruments used for celestial navigation,” said Medrano. “It’s pretty cool because we quartermasters can be relied on for safe navigation even when there is a loss of radar and telecommunications. We will use flags and lights to communicate with other ships.” Ronald Reagan provides a combat-ready force, which protects and defends the collective maritime interests of the U.S. and its allies and partners in the Indo-Asia-Pacific region.
